Additions, clarifications, extended definition
The metric expresses how many times a message was potentially displayed to the audience. Unlike reach, it also counts repeated exposures of the same user.
It is used across media, including online (banner impressions, video views, post views), social media, print or television records.
Combined with total reach, these two metrics can be used to calculate the average frequency of exposure.
Interpretation
A higher number of impressions indicates more intensive visibility of the message. It helps assess the volume of media exposure, but says nothing about quality or whether the audience noticed the message, remembered it or was influenced by it in any way.
Watch out: limits and risks of distortion
- "Impressions" are not a uniform quantity – their type and quality need to be distinguished. For example, viewable impressions represent content that was actually displayed, while non-viewable ones may occur when content loads outside the visible part of the screen.
- Impressions of a website banner therefore differ from impressions of an article in Forbes or, say, a video on YouTube – among other things in length of exposure, placement, interactivity or the user's actual attention. Total impressions should therefore also be supplemented with a breakdown by individual channels, and at this (lower) level with a closer interpretation of the result.
- For some media types it is impossible to determine this metric precisely – print media is a typical example: "How many times did a reader open the magazine to this exact page?"
Where and how to measure
- Digital analytics tools (Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn Campaign Manager, YouTube Studio, Sklik).
- Media monitoring systems (Mediaboard, Newton Media, Meltwater).
- Readership and audience data (Media projekt, NetMonitor), etc.
Context
It serves as a complementary metric to total reach, helping determine the average frequency of exposure and evaluate campaign effectiveness in terms of visibility.
Formulas
total impressions = ∑ impressions across all communication channels used
Example from practice
An online campaign generated 8.7 million impressions in digital media, 3.2 million on social media and 1.1 million in display advertising. Including all formats, the total number of impressions was 13 million. Total reach was calculated at 4.5 million people according to the media agency's model, so the average frequency of exposure was 2.9. However, the analysis also showed that only 64% of impressions fell into the viewable category, i.e. actually displayed to users.
