Additions, clarifications, extended definition
It is one of the most common metrics for evaluating paid advertising on social media. CPM is calculated as total campaign costs divided by the number of impressions delivered, expressed per 1000 impressions. The metric provides a view of content distribution efficiency – that is, how expensive it is to deliver an ad to users. It is particularly suited to campaigns focused on brand awareness or reach.
Interpretation
It is a cost metric of distribution efficiency, showing how expensive it is to reach an audience on a given platform. A low CPM means content is being delivered cheaply and efficiently, while a high CPM may suggest narrow targeting, high competition or a format that is less attractive to the auction system.
Watch out: limits and risks of distortion
- You pay for impressions, but a single user may be reached by the ad several times.
- Typical CPM values differ between Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn, where they tend to be the highest.
- It is not a quality metric. A low CPM does not mean the campaign is meeting its objectives.
- Dependence on the auction, format and platform. The price is influenced by competition, seasonality and ad relevance. Video ads and interactive formats also tend to have different CPMs than static banners.
Where and how to measure
- The native analytics tools of advertising platforms (Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn Campaign Manager, TikTok Ads Manager etc.).
Formulas
CPM = (total campaign costs / number of impressions) × 1000
Example from practice
A LinkedIn campaign cost EUR 5 000 and delivered 400 000 impressions. The CPM therefore came to EUR 12.50. Compared with Facebook, where the brand achieved a CPM of around EUR 3.30, this showed that while LinkedIn is significantly more expensive for content distribution, it also reaches a more precisely defined target audience of B2B professionals.
