Clicks indicate the total number of clicks users made on a post or ad. They include both interactions leading off the platform and internal clicks that take place directly within the social network.

Additions, clarifications, extended definition
Clicks are one of the broadest engagement metrics, as they include all user actions related to the content. The total click count typically includes clicks on a link, but also clicks on the profile picture, page name, a comment, an image or any other element of the post. This makes the metric a good indicator of user interest in the content, but on its own it does not distinguish whether a click led, for example, to a website visit. For better data handling, it is useful to distinguish the subtypes: link clicks and outbound clicks. The more specific the metric, the more precisely it shows how many people actually reached your target website or completed the desired action.
Interpretation
This is an acquisition metric that shows how many users expressed interest by clicking on the content and continued interacting. Total clicks speak to the level of engagement, while link clicks and outbound clicks provide a more accurate picture of how many people were actually driven off the platform – towards the website, a conversion or another campaign objective.
Watch out: limits and risks of distortion
- Platform differences – some networks use different terms and methodologies (e.g. Meta distinguishes link clicks vs. outbound clicks, other platforms do not).
- Tracking setup risk – incorrectly configured UTM parameters can lead to errors in downstream measurement in Google Analytics or other systems.
- Quality vs. quantity – a high number of clicks does not mean users completed the desired action. Clicks need to be tracked in a broader context alongside other metrics that indicate user interest and subsequent steps.
Where and how to measure
- Native platform analytics (Instagram Insights, Meta Business Suite, TikTok Analytics, LinkedIn Analytics, etc.).
- Data can also be tracked through third-party tools, e.g. Emplifi, Brandwatch, Hootsuite, etc.
Formulas
CTR (click-through rate) = (number of clicks / number of impressions) × 100
click-to-reach rate = (number of clicks / reach) × 100
Example from practice
A Facebook advertising campaign achieved 50,000 impressions and generated 2,500 clicks. Most of them, however, were clicks on the profile or the post detail, while there were only 300 link clicks. This showed that users expressed general interest in the content, but only a small proportion were willing to leave the platform and continue to the website. The click count thus confirmed engagement, but at the same time revealed that the campaign's actual acquisition value was limited.
