Additions, clarifications, extended definition
This is a viewership metric for video content placed directly on a website or in an app. All video starts are counted, both when a user actively clicks the "Play" button and when the video starts automatically (autoplay), if this is enabled on the site. Different systems may define what counts as a view differently – some count an immediate start, for example, while others require several seconds of watch time. It is therefore always necessary to work with the clear definition used by the given tool.
Interpretation
Video views are an indicator of interest in video content, showing whether users started the video at all. They serve as an entry-level metric that is best combined with more qualitative indicators such as average watch time or completion rate.
Watch out: limits and risks of distortion
- Beware of autoplay, as in this case a view may not reflect genuine user interest. In some cases, for example, the user left the page immediately.
- Quantity ≠ quality – a high number of views does not mean users watched the whole video.
Where and how to measure
- Web analytics tools such as GA4 and similar.
- Directly in video player statistics (e.g. YouTube Analytics). For in-house players, specialised event tracking can also be used.
Formulas
video play rate (share of visitors who started the video) = (number of video plays / number of page visits) × 100
Example from practice
A product page on an e-shop featured an explainer video. The page was visited by 20 000 users, 4 000 of whom started the video. The video play rate was therefore 20%. This showed that a fifth of visitors were motivated by the video content, which is an above-average result. Based on this, the company added similar videos to other product pages.
